Lasesia is the term Hermetic magi, mostly magi Merinitae, use to describe Faerie Hedge Wizardry. The term derives from Classical Latin lares, referring to Roman gods of a place, especially household deities of a Roman home. One who practices Lasesia is a Lasesitor or Lasesitrix, although most practicioners have their own terms in their various languages, some of which may overlap with other supernatural talents. Although the description and rules for Faerie Wizardry given in RoP:F are creative, they prove unwieldy in practice due to the huge "experience sink" required to perform more than a very few effects. Although a previous draft Saga Rule attempted to address this by removing or limiting the constraint of Sympathy Traits, that also did away with much of the flavor of Faerie Wizardry. Thus, a better solution was desirable. Upon further consideration, a more effective correction is to simply eliminate the "Methods & Powers" schema, specifically by eliminating the need for Powers, and replacing the bonus provided by a Power with a bonus derived from the Sympathy Traits of the caster. This retains the core concept that Lasesia derives from Sympathy (and only Sympathy), without requiring as many additional Abilities to be developed. Lasesia requires that a character possess a Major or Minor Supernatural Virtue of Faerie Sympathy, as well as at least one other Major Supernatural Virtue: Evocation, Enchantment, or Empathy. These are not referred to as "Methods" but simply as Lasesia Abilities or Virtues. Characters may have more than one Lasesia Virtue, or may learn Lasesia Abilities as part of a Tradition, but in either case must possess the Faerie Sympathy Virtue, either Major or Minor, to develop Lasesia Abilities. This significantly reduces the number of Supernatural Abilities required to practice Lasesia, and as a result, Lasesitor characters will be able to focus on developing Sympathy Traits. Additionally, a new Virtue is available: Highly Sympathetic (Major, General) Any character may select Highly Sympathetic as a Virtue, although it is clearly more valuable to a character who is likely to develop multiple Sympathy Traits. The Sympathy Trait Total referred to above is equal to the total of all of the caster's Sympathy Traits that are applicable to the target and situation; negative Traits should be subtracted from this total; note that this is different than the calculation used to determine the maximum Rite Level, which is the same as stated in RoP:F (121). This does mean that a negative Sympathy Trait can increase the maximum Rite Level permitted, but still reduce the caster's Rite Casting Total. An appicable negative Trait enables a potentially more potent effect, but makes it more difficult to achieve. Although "Powers" are not part of Lasesia, all guidelines listed for the eight Faerie Wizardry Powers in RoP:F remain available to Lasesia. Each set of guidelines listed under the name of a Power may be referred to by that name, as a category of possible effects. Each category of Lasesia effects also must have an associated vulnerability (124). Different categories may have different vulnerabilities, subject to Storyguide / Troupe approval. Because Lasesia Abilities are Supernatural Abilities, a character may choose a Specialization for each such Ability developed. Suitable specializations include specific categories of effect: i.e. Beguile, Conjure, Grant, etc.. Faerie Ceremony Lasesia Traditions Volkhvy Characters in such cultures may possess a number of Sympathy Traits for various deities, derived from their pagan belief. Such Traits based upon pagan belief do not require Faerie Warping, but may be derived from Flaws such as Pious or Pagan. In any case, the total scores of Sympathy Traits derived from pagan belief may not exceed the total Trait Score for pagan belief. For example, a character with the Pagan Major Story Flaw has a minimum Personality Trait Score of 3 for Pagan Belief. From that Personality Trait, the character may select Sympathy Traits for appropraite pagan deities, but the total Sympathy Trait scores derived from Pagan Belief would be limited to three. If a character had a Pious Major Personality Flaw for a pagan religion, then they could have up to six points of score in appropriate pagan belief Sympathy Traits. Note that a Pagan Belief Personality Trait, and pagan belief Sympathy Traits derived from it, are two different things. One defines the character's personality and behavior, while the other affects Sympathy-related actions. However, for most characters, a Sympathy Trait derived from pagan belief may not exceed twice the Score of the next lowest pagan belief Trait (but may always have a score of at least one). For example, a character might be permitted three points of Sympathy Traits derived from pagan belief, but must divide them between at least two appropriate deities (scores of one and two); such a character could also have three different Sympathy Traits with scores of one each, but could not possess a pagan belief Sympathy Trait with a score of three, unless he also had pagan belief Traits of two and one for at least two other appropriate deities. Note: negative Sympathy Traits derived from pagan belief may be counted as "positive" for this purpose only in the case where the negative Sympathy Traits correspond to an opposing deity. Thus, a character could have a positive Trait with a score of two and a negative trait with a score of one, if that negative Trait corresponds to a pagan deity opposed to the first Trait. The only exception to this general rule is for a priest dedicated to service of a single deity; in that case only, no limit applies to the Sympathy Trait for that single deity. Thus, Volkhvy and similar pagan priests typically have both the Pagan Major Story Flaw and the Pious Major Personality Flaw, allowing them up to nine points of Sympathy Traits for appropriate pagan deities. However, even priest characters must observe the above rule regarding scores for pagan belief Sympathy Traits other than a single dedicated deity, and typically will have only minimal Sympathy Traits for other applicable deities. Those Volkhvy who serve several related deities often have lower Traits for each, and must observe the constraints noted above. Sympathy Traits derived from pagan belief are separate from those based on Faerie Warping or related Virtues & Flaws. However, only pagan deities applicable to the character's culture may be selected as Sympathy Traits derived from pagan belief. Other Sympathy Traits would still require Faerie Warping and/or appropriate Virtues, with corresponding limits. Sympathy Traits derived from pagan belief may be increased later if allowed by the character's Warping Score and applicable Virtues & Flaws, although the limits noted above still apply (thus encouraging pagan characters to have a variety of Sympathy Traits applicable to pagan belief for their culture). Note that when performing a Faerie Rite, all applicable Sympathy Traits should be applied, whether they are derived from pagan belief or from other sources. Few Volkhvy are Gifted; most are Companion or Mythic Companion characters, whose talent with Faerie Sympathy provides the necessary basis for their powers. Kolduni, on the other hand, are all Gifted (Hedge Magic, 77); those few Volkhvy who have The Gift tend to have the Gentle Gift, or are Inoffensive to Faeries at a minimum.
