he Infernal realm is "the embodiment of evil and decay - of physical destruction and moral corruption" (page 186, Ars Magica, 5th edition). It is the force of rebellion against Divine authority, and works continually to undermine the works of the Divine, and to corrupt whatever and whoever it can.
The power of the Infernal realm manifests in Infernal auras, demons and other Infernal beings, and through supernatural Infernal abiliities. Even those without supernatural talents may draw upon the power of the infernal through sinful ritual and the power of desecration of that which is holy. Those who wield supernatural Infernal powers can leverage those powers through sin and desecration as well. Even supernatural talents that appear to derive from the Faerie or Magic realms may be corrupted by the Infernal. Its influence is pervasive throughout Mythic Europe. Magi are not immune to this force of corruption, and consequently Lex Hermei forbids dealing with demons. However, the Infernal realm is not limited to demons only, and ancient magical traditions also draw on the Infernal through corruption and dark rituals to gain power. Hell is full of good wishes and desires, as St. Bernard said, and magi who merely want to draw on the power of the Infernal for their gain may find themselves not only damned in the afterlife, but drawn into Infernal service in the current life as well. Just as the Dominion arises from the actions of the faithful, so the Infernal realm may manifest wherever strong sins are committed, especially in a repeated fashion. The altar of a diaboiist will manifest Infernal power, but so will the seedy tavern of ill repute in the dark recesses of the city, where those of ill will and immoral desires meet and act on their sinful urges. The Infernal arises wherever it can, and most desires to corrup the faithful, although it will corrupt even the heretic and unbeliever, should opportunity present itself. The Infernal realm is normally inimical to the practice of magic, unless the magus inculcates himself with Infernal power, and thus aligns himself with that realm. Infernal agents always welcome one who wishes to align himself with the Infernal realm, even as they work to undermine any good intentions the magus may have for doing so. Nonetheless, some will risk even their very souls for the additional power they can gain from the Infernal realm.
