Psychometry is the
discipline of "eading the psychic impressions left on all material objects.
With training it can also be used to hide such
impressions. |
|
|
|
|
|
Psychometry manifests as a brief image of a
person or event, or alternately as a brief sound, smell, etc. Possibly a short
conversation is heard, or in some cases, even an entire scene can be replayed in the
psychics senses. The psychic will also gain a general sense of the age of the
manifestation she is sensing. In its most basic Latent levels, that is the only ability
available to the psychic. With training, additional abilities may be gained. |
|
|
|
|
|
Normally, an object must be touched in order
for such psychic impressions to manifest themselves to the psychic. However, in the case
of extremely strong psychic impressions, just being in the immediate area (within the
psychics Primary Zone) may result in a vision. |
|
|
|
|
|
Most psychic impressions fade very quickly
(within a few minutes). Exceptions to this are impressions of events with strong emotional
content (arguments, lovemaking, murder, etc), or impressions left through long association
with an individual (owner, creator, etc.). In order for a person to leave a lasting
psychic impression without intense emotion being involved, the object and person must be
in frequent or continuous contact for a minimum of several days. Such a person is
known as an Associate of the object. Every object that has been crafted in some way will
have at least one Associate (the creator). It is possible for natural objects to have no
Associates. |

Psychometry: |
|
|
Default Difficulty |
Moderate (10) |
Marginal Success |
The psychic senses a brief
manifestation of very recent events or Associates (within the last few days). |
Complete Success |
The psychic senses a
manifestation of the most significant event or Associate within the last few weeks. |
Superior Success |
The psychic senses a
manifestation of the most significant event or Associate within the last few months. |
Extraordinary Success |
The psychic senses a
manifestation of the most significant event(s) or Associate(s) within the past few years. |
Mythic Success |
The psychic senses a
manifestation of the most significant event(s) or Associate(s) within the last century (or
more, if the impression is extremely strong enough that it overwhelms all the more
recent events). |
|
|
|
|
|
|
Note: it is possible that the most
significant event just happened, and that something that happened only moments ago will be
what is manifested, even on a Mythic Success. This is especially likely with relatively
young objects. If nothing "significant" has happened to an object, its creation
might be viewed. For example, a psychic picks up a fist-sized rock on a mountain trail. He
hears the sound of running water and sees a scene of ice melting and running off the side
of a cliff, and sees some small rocks break free of the restraining ice and tumble to the
trail. Thats all. |

Hide
Signature is the ability to
"erase" the psychics own impressions from an object or place. This is an
extremely difficult task, and is normally possible only for a well-trained psychic. Many
psychics, even accomplished psychometrists, never learn to do this. |
|
|
|
|
|
Once a psychic impression has been erased
using this ability, a psychometrist will not be able to detect that such an impression
ever existed. However, a Superior success or higher on the Psychometry Trial may
detect that some kind of erasure was performed on the object. This will only
occur if the degree of success of the Psychometry Trial exceeds the degree of success of
the Hide Signature Trial (thus, a Mythic Success on the Hide Signature Trial will prevent
any psychic from sensing that an impression was erased). A psychic sensing that an
erasure was accomplished will merely gain a sense of emptiness about the object, where
there should be some sensation. The psychic will never be able to sense who erased
the impression or under what circumstances, merely that such an erasure was performed.
The psychic will generally not be able to sense even when the erasure was
performed, but may be able to use logic to determine the general time-frame
if the psychic has some idea
(from other knowledge) of when an impression would have been made on the object.
For example, if the psychic has reason to believe that a knife was used in a murder, which
occurred last night, and senses nothing about that murder but a "blank" on the
object, then the psychic might come to the conclusion that the impression was erased
sometime during the last day. |

|
|
|
Training in the ESP ability of Signsense is a
requisite for learning this ability. |
|
|
Each use of Hide Signature costs the psychic
one Fatigue Level. |

Default Difficulty |
Challenging
(15) |
Requisite: |
ESP 5 (Signsense) |
Marginal Success |
Minor impressions (brief but not
intense emotional events, or brief ownership of the object) can be erased. |
Complete Success |
Most general impressions (typical
events or ownership of no more than a few months) can be erased. |
Superior Success |
Impressions of a strong nature
(intense emotional events such as murder or ownership for several years) can be erased. |
Extraordinary Success |
Very strong impressions (creation
of the object, or psychic or mystical attunement) can be erased. |
Mythic Success |
All impressions of any kind
associated with the psychic are erased from the object, including any impression gained
from this erasure. |
