èrra sits on the shore of Mar de Bèrra, about fifteen miles west of Aics (Aix). Bèrra appears to be a beguinage, with a small village and a school and a hospital to the northeast. The hospital is provided for pilgrims on the route to Santiago de Compostela. Only magae reside at Bèrra. Male magi may meet with the "beguines" at the hospital, but no men are allowed inside the beginage, or at the school. The beguinage is not entirely a sham: all of the magae who reside here are Christian and the covenfolk lead lives very much like those in a beguinage. The theological views of some magae would be regarded as heretical, were they known, but such views are not discussed with covenfolk or outsiders. The resident magae enjoy a degree of freedom from male-dominated life outside the beguinage, although most travel away from the conventum from time to time in pursuit of their individual goals.
